Time Lived In: Almost a year
Neighborhood: Atwater Village
Occupation: I'm a creative director and producer. I was producing editorial shoots at MyDomaine for about 5 years for designers like Kelly Wearstler, Nate Berkus + Jeremiah Brent, and Jake Arnold and then started directing cover shoots for interior enthusiasts like Miranda Kerr.
GLB: What makes this space “home?”
Hillary: I'm really obsessed with "collected" spaces. I love scouring for antiques and thrifting designer furniture. My fiance', Mark, would call these our 'treasures' or in other words, all of our 'found' items. They're what make our home ours. It's a dichotomy to love design and to also feel passionate about sustainability, so most things in our home have been "previously loved" or are vintage/secondhand. Don't get me wrong, Mark and I both love a new home goods store-- but it's all about balance. Our home is a mix of new and old, found and bought, and it makes it innately 'ours'.
GLB: What are 3 things in your apartment that you can’t live without?
Hillary: Our art, our photo archives, and the bathtub (I can't live in a home without one-- it's my favorite way to relax). We have some of Mark's personal work framed at home as well as art by Luke Chiswell.
GLB: What do you love about living in an older property?
Hillary: I am a GLB alum, having lived in three gorgeous historic apartments previous to this house. My favorite being the Chateau Rossmore. I love the history and details, especially with the mix of art deco and Spanish style apartments in LA... the arches, the fireplace mantles, the juliette balconies. I love seeing all the little historical details that make these homes special. Our home now is a 1950's bungalow, so still a bit newer than some of the previous apartments I've lived in, but we still have a lot of vintage details. It's a perfect balance, because they kept a lot of the original charm, but our kitchen has been renovated and upgraded a bit. We have a very unique ship motif on our fireplace mantle and these gorgeous built-in sconces that give off the most amazing light. Some of our windows had to be replaced, but we have about 5 or 6 original windows that aren't as functional as they are fun and beautiful. My absolute favorite part of this home is the dutch door that goes out to the backyard-- we keep the little window in the door open while anyone is outside and it just keeps everyone together. In my other GLB apartments, I've had fabulous elevators with accordion latch doors, beautiful molding, original windows, marble staircases, and lots of french windows and doors which are probably my favorite.
GLB: What are 3 words to describe your personal/interior style?
Hillary: Collected, vintage and organic.
GLB: What room do you spend the most time in? Why?
Hillary: I spend the most time in the office-- I'm very lucky that I get to work from home when I'm not on location or sets. Although this summer I want to make it a point to spend a lot more time in the yard and garden.
GLB: What are your favorite neighborhood spots?
Hillary: Atwater is a VERY small neighborhood and there's not a lot of availability over here. We watched for openings pretty religiously until we found the right place. The neighborhood is friendly, quiet and very walkable; aka heaven for a couple in their 30s with two dogs. My favorite interior stores are on the block too. On Sundays we like to get a coffee at Proof or Black Elephant and browse at DeKor, or Merchant Modern. I also pick up wine and pantry items from Wine + Eggs pretty regularly - they have the best variety of beverages. For food we love getting tacos + margs at Salazar and sitting on the golf course at the Los Feliz cafe for a quiet brunch. We love hopping back over the bridge and going to Broome Street for coffee + gifts. I also have to mention Club Tee Gee - it's just always a good vibe.
