GLB: How long have you lived in your ABODE?
Holger: I’ve lived in the building for 8 years, in this unit for 5 years
GLB: What do you do?
Holger: I am a small business admin/marketing/IT consultant (www.holgerlaufenberg.com)
GLB: What makes your ABODE your home?
Holger: Undoubtedly, the architecture plays a significant role, as the townhouse layout distinguishes it from a typical apartment or flat. However, what truly made it my own was the decision to accept the unit "as-is" when I moved in, allowing me to restore it to its former glory and infuse it with my personal style. I took charge of embellishing the decor, selecting fixtures, and adding unique touches that truly reflect my taste and personality.
GLB: What are 3 things in your home that you can't live without?
Holger:
- My cherished balcony, despite its small size, provides me with a much-needed outdoor retreat.
- A guest bathroom is self-explanatory, as it ensures convenience and privacy for visitors.
- The allure of old-world charm holds a special place in my heart. While modern aesthetics can be appealing, what truly makes me feel at home is the absence of a cookie-cutter design that resembles a high-end hotel suite. I find solace in the unique character of older elements that carry a sense of history and authenticity.
GLB: What are some words to describe your personal/interior style?
Holger:
- Eclectic Fusion: My style is a blend of various influences and elements, creating an eclectic fusion that reflects my diverse tastes. I love combining different design periods, cultural inspirations, and textures to create a visually stimulating and unique aesthetic.
- Vintage Revival: Vintage pieces play a significant role in my style. I am drawn to the charm and character of older items, whether it's antique furniture, retro accessories, or vintage artwork. I enjoy incorporating these pieces into my space, giving it a timeless and nostalgic vibe.
- Nature's Touch: Bringing the outdoors inside is an essential aspect of my style. I strive to incorporate natural elements into my decor, such as plants, natural fibers, and earthy colors. This connection to nature adds a sense of tranquility and organic beauty to my space, creating a harmonious and calming atmosphere.
- Or as I sometimes joke: Imitation Art, knock-off furniture & kitch haha
GLB: What do you love about living in a historic property?
Holger: As a nostalgic person, I deeply appreciate the beauty of old things. They hold a special allure for me because they were often crafted with a focus on human experience rather than purely driven by efficiency, cost-effectiveness, or practicality, which is often prevalent in modern architecture and design. The attention to detail, intricate craftsmanship, and intentional design choices of the past evoke a sense of nostalgia and an appreciation for the human touch. Old objects and architectural styles carry a certain warmth and soul that resonates with me, reminding me of a time when aesthetics and human experience were highly valued in the creation of spaces and objects.
GLB: What do you love about living in Los Angeles?
Holger: The weather in Los Angeles is simply unbeatable. The consistent sunshine and mild temperatures create a year-round paradise that is hard to resist. Additionally, one of the greatest perks of living in Los Angeles is the abundance of outdoor opportunities right at your fingertips. From beautiful beaches along the coastline to stunning hiking trails in the nearby mountains, the city offers a diverse range of outdoor activities for nature enthusiasts.
GLB: What are your favorite places in LA?
Holger:
- Griffith Park: I absolutely love spending time at Griffith Park, whether it's going on a hike with my dogs or enjoying a bike ride. Its close proximity and easy accessibility make it a convenient and quick getaway for me. The park offers a variety of trails and breathtaking views, allowing me to reconnect with nature and recharge.
- The Canine Social Club (Dog People Park) in Santa Monica: This unique concept park designed for dog owners is an absolute gem. It's an outdoor park combined with a coffee shop, exclusively catering to our furry friends and us. It's a fantastic place to socialize with other dog owners while our pets play and have a great time together. The atmosphere is welcoming and dog-centric, creating a wonderful sense of community.
- Abbot Kinney: The vibrant and eclectic vibe of Abbot Kinney is something I truly adore. The array of charming coffee shops, restaurants, and quirky boutiques create an enchanting atmosphere. I enjoy exploring the various establishments, indulging in delicious food and beverages, and discovering unique treasures in the nicknack stores. Abbot Kinney is a hub of creativity and offers a delightful experience with its distinctive character and lively energy.
