GLB: Please tell us about yourself, your work, your medium, and how you got started with this specific collection of work.
Nick: The work I make stems from observations of nature. Particularly me trying to recall an event or feeling within nature. These can stem from small color combinations in botanicals to larger astrological events. I am trying to bring that feeling to the viewer in a simplistic way, primarily with plastics and pigments. The pigments are sometimes natural and sometimes manufactured. I started working in plastics due to its overabundance in our day to day lives, but also its quality of being overlooked. I wanted to create work that brought nature (which is often overlooked) and plastics into a more recognizable yet foreign state.
GLB: Can you describe your work in 3 words?
Nick: In your dreams 😁
GLB: Where do you find inspiration? Are there artists that have inspired your work today?
Nick: Mainly I find inspiration in the interaction of nature and and its emotional effect on humans. Rothko and O’Keeffe are two important artists for me in terms of conveying an emotional response from the viewer.
GLB: How does Los Angeles inspire you?
Nick: I don’t know if the city itself plays a role in inspiration, but one benefit of living here is that it is fairly close to a lot of different climates, giving Southern California a vast variety different natural occurrences and botanicals.
GLB: What’s is your favorite piece of work at this moment?
Nick: My newest work is always my favorite. It is always the starting point for new ideas.
GLB: Is there anything you haven’t made yet that you are excited about and have in the pipeline?
Nick: I have a lot of ideas that I haven’t made yet. A lot of ideas are meant to come once I’ve reached certain steps in my career! So I’m always excited about new collaborations or even mistakes in my work which lead to new discoveries.
You can experience Nick’s work in person at our upcoming collaboration with Rhett Baruch Gallery, Olympique Gates: Portals of Nature, opening Friday, May 17th.
